Winter in the village

The quieter half of the year, when everything the summer does gets planned.

Redakcija Pecke

In summer, Pecka is full. Climbers, cyclists and groups arrive, the festival puts the whole village on its feet, and it's easy to think that's Pecka. But anyone who wants to understand this place should come in winter too, once all those people have gone and the village is left with the ones who made it what it is.

Winter here isn't empty. It just does other work. Everything that looks in summer as if it happens by itself, the maintained trails, the ready center, the hosts who greet you as if they'd been waiting for you in particular, none of that happens in July. It's prepared in January, while snow falls and there's no one around to see it being prepared.

At the center, in the old schoolhouse from 1931, a wood stove burns through winter. That's not just heating. It's the thing you sit around. While the wind carries snow across the meadows people climb from in summer, inside there's a plan being made for the next season, a conversation about what the coming festival will look like, a reckoning of what needs fixing, where a trail has washed out and which sign needs replacing. A village that hosts hundreds of people in summer makes that decision quietly, by the fire, long before anyone arrives.

In the households, winter has its own rhythm. It's the season for gathering in what autumn gave. In the pantries stand the preserves, the cheese, the rakija, all the things a guest is served in summer as if it were normal for them to always exist. It isn't normal. They exist because someone worked through the whole autumn and winter for them to exist. Whoever sits at that table in July is eating a winter that has passed.

And what does winter offer the rare guest who does come? It offers what summer can't. The climbing rock under snow, empty and silent. Forest without a single footstep but your own. A warm kitchen you come into frozen and that no one hurries you out of. Winter Pecka isn't for everyone or for every day, but for anyone who's after quiet rather than a programme, it gives it in a measure you'll find nowhere in summer.

So don't think nothing happens here in winter. The most important thing does. Everything that lets summer look easy in the first place happens right now.
