Morning at the springs of the Sana
What the source looks like before anybody else turns up, and why it is worth the early start.

The springs of the Sana are lovely by day. At dawn they are something else.
Come early, before the sun climbs over the ridge and before anyone appears but you, and you catch the water in the moment it's still alone with itself. A thin layer of mist hangs over the surface, because water rising out of the karst is colder than the air, and you can see the difference between them with your naked eye. That mist doesn't lift all at once. It hangs, shifts when the first light touches it, and is gone before you notice it going.
The Sana doesn't rise in a single place. The protected Vrela Sane Nature Monument covers more than three hundred hectares and gathers several karst springs, among them Mračaj, an estavelle that behaves unlike an ordinary spring. Under some conditions it pushes water out, under others it draws water in. That underground world is strange enough that cave divers travel here for it, dropping into channels beneath the surface and vanishing where the rest of us can't follow.
What early morning gives you, and what's gone later, is a quiet in which you can hear everything else. Birds are loudest before the day warms. The water has a sound of its own that the daytime hum of people swallows, but at dawn it comes through clean, like something filling an enormous vessel from the inside that never quite fills. A deer that comes down to drink won't come while there's a crowd; it comes while it thinks no one is there.
There's a plainly practical reason to rise early too. In summer the day heats quickly, so the walk to the springs and back is far kinder while the shadows are long and the air isn't yet baked. From the center it's around six kilometres to the source, just far enough that starting early makes sense and gets you back before the worst of the heat.
It isn't that the daytime visit isn't worth it. It is. But anyone who once sees the springs in mist, before everyone else, understands afterward exactly what the alarm clock bought them.
