VRELA SANE NATURAL MONUMENT · GORNJA PECKA, BOSNIA
where the water sings
Right beside the springs of the Sana hides one of western Bosnia's most beautiful water trails. Clear water threading through narrow rock, quiet pools that mirror the sky, small waterfalls and tufa cascades — and the remains of old watermills along the banks.
Quick facts
What you check before packing a second pair of shoes.
A world of clear water
The first thing you notice is the water — so clear you can see every stone on the bottom. The Korana threads through the canyon in a string of pools, small waterfalls and tufa cascades: mirror-calm in places, playful over the rock in others.
The passage runs through narrow walls, past the remains of old watermills, stone walls and wooden bridges — quiet reminders of the village that once lived by the river. Time stands still here, and the only sound is running water.
This isn't a wild, inaccessible gorge. It's gentle and almost fairy-tale, open to anyone of average fitness.

The passage
From the canyon entrance to Suvo vrelo you walk in the river, swimming where you have to. The water rises as you go — and then, at the end, it disappears.

0.2 m
A short transfer from the centre (~3 km) and two hundred metres on foot. You step into the water — colder than you expect, and clearer.
The return to the parking area is about 800 m on a dry path.
A rare hydrological phenomenon, and the strangest ending to a walk you could imagine. From here a made footpath leads to all the main springs of the Sana, so the canyon and the springs fall naturally into one day.
The Sana springsThe river's story
Before the canyon grew over with forest, the Korana was more open to the sun, fuller, and warmer in summer. For the villagers it was the favourite place to bathe — the centre of village life.
The pool where the girls of the village bathed.
Where everyone gathered together — play, laughter and the summer memories of many generations.
The pool kept for the young men. An unwritten rule, and it was respected.
Today those names recall a time when the river was a meeting place — and they give the canyon a soul the water alone would not have.
Guided canyoning
The finest way to experience the river is with a guide who knows every pool — walking, with a swim where the river asks for one.
On request, for groups formed in advance. The price is set by the number of participants.
Anyone of average physical fitness. No prior canyoning experience is needed, and the guide sets the minimum age according to conditions and the make-up of the group.
The date depends on water level and weather. May to July is the best window, when the Korana has enough water and it isn't cold.
Canyoning also runs during the Pecka Outdoor Festival, on the last weekend of June.
The water is mostly knee-deep or above the knee, and chest-deep in places depending on the level. In several pools you can swim.
What to bring
No specialised kit is required. This is the whole list.
Safety
Canyoning is safe when the rules and the guide's instructions are followed. Two things decide everything: the water level and your shoes.

Best time
May – July
Enough water, a pleasant temperature. This is the season for canyoning.
High summer
The level can drop sharply, and the Korana sometimes dries up completely.
After rain
Wait for stable conditions. High water means nobody goes in.
River crayfish
The Korana was once known for its river crayfish, which locals traditionally caught for their own table. Crayfish live only in the cleanest rivers, so they are still the measure of how well preserved the Korana is.
Watch them in their habitat — without disturbing or catching them.
Pecka as your base
The whole adventure begins and ends in Pecka. You take a break at the Visitor Center before setting off, and after the water there's a warm meal and a bed waiting.
